New Age definition for the 2020/21 season
USA Volleyball has approved a pretty drastic change to the age definitions for the 2020/21 season.
The cutoff dates for each groups was September 1. It will now change to July 1. The rational for the change is that players with a July or August birthday will now be able to play in a younger age group and may have more opportunities to play with class mates.
The main effect of the change is that all players with a July or August birthdate, who were not on age waivers or playing up, will be able to play another year in the same age group, as the previous season, regardless of their grade. Players that were playing in the region with an age waiver last season, and have a July or August birthdate, do no longer need an age waiver and can play on a Premier level team.
The membership season still runs from September 1 till August 31. A player who qualifies as a 15 and under player when registering in September, will remain eligible to participate in the 15 and under age group until August 31, even if the player has a July or August birthday.
The main effect is that all players that were not on age waivers or playing up, and have a July or August birthday, will be able to play another year in the same age group, as the previous season.
Also, a Player who qualifies as an 18 and under player, but is still a junior in high school and born is before July 1, will be allowed to play in the 17 and under age division.
HOA is of the opinion that the changes that are made are good, but the timing is far from great. Though, as we do not want to put our teams in a position of disadvantage versus the rest of the country, we will implement the change for the 2020/21 season. HOA will still allow age waivers for players that are in a lower grade in the Select division. We expect though that the age cutoff date will eliminate the need for most of the age waivers.
